Richard Ormrod Piano / Mary Hofman Violin

"Very impressive performances, full of passion and grace" - Cambrian News

Richard Ormrod and Mary Hofman have performed duos together for five years in venues across the UK as well as touring the Mediterranean, Malaysia and Cambodia. They enjoy playing both innovative and more traditional programmes with the special intimacy of a husband/wife duo! They also offer the unusual mixture of solo piano, solo violin and violin/piano duo works which creates a freshness in the programming frequently appreciated by audiences. When not making music they love to spend their time exploring the mountains around their home in north Wales with their young daughters.

Since graduating in 2007, Mary has pursued a varied career as an orchestral and chamber musician and teacher. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music with Krysia Ososotowicz and English Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge. She went on to study with Ida Levin and Lorenz Gamma in the U.S. While studying there she won an award from the Maestro Foundation in Los Angeles leading to a number of chamber music performances on the United States' West Coast. Mary has worked as guest leader of the Edinburgh Quartet as well as performing with the Endellion quartet and plays regularly with Ensemble Cymru. She has worked with most of Britain's leading chamber orchestras including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata and Britten Sinfonia. Mary also teaches violin at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music and Bangor University.

In autumn 2018 Mary and Richard will be starting a project with Rhyl music club performing all ten Beethoven Violin and Piano sonatas in ten music clubs across Wales.  A new work by Rhian Samuel, Hilary Tann and Sarah Lianne Lewis has been commissioned for each set of sonatas. This project has been generously supported by PRS Foundation's Women Make Music, The Colwinston Foundation, Ty Cerdd and Gwyneth and Tony Peters.
